To Plant, or Not to Plant? Regulating Invasive Plant Species in the Mid-Atlantic States: A Social-Ecological System Case Study

As invasive plant species spread across landscapes, costs of their economic and environmental impacts have sparked interest in regulating their sale and transport. Laws now prohibit the sale and movement of some species. State and local governments are drafting regulations that will affect horticulture, plant nurseries, and options for landscape design. Awareness of invasive plant species is slowly increasing among homeowners and professionals who make local-scale planting decisions, while panels of experts and industry representatives are being convened to decide which plants to restrict, and how. These important questions require synthesis of economic, social, and scientific information. This case study asks students to explore the ecological and social dimensions of this complex problem system from a variety of perspectives, including business, policy, and ecological science.

Pedagogical Use Description This case study guides students through a series of activities in which they learn to use social-ecological systems thinking while learning ecological concepts and becoming familiar with invasive plant species. Concepts addressed include invasive species, the process of invasion, the role of human actions in plant species invasion, risk assessment and development of regulations, social-ecological systems, creating mental models of complex systems, and proposing policies.

This document contains all of the learning activities in the case study sequence. Detailed descriptions of activities and interactive lecture presentations are provided in separate resource documents.
Uniqueness This case study requires students to explore a complex social-ecological problem system from a variety of perspectives, including business, policy, and ecological science. Students investigate how decisions are made based on science while learning core concepts in community ecology and invasion biology.
