A collection of slides about the effects of frost on Colorado wildflowers at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL).
RMBL is a high-altitude field research station at 9,500 feet in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. RMBL has supported field work since it was founded in 1928, and is the location of the research described in this slide show.
These Landsat images show Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve on December 4, 1994, a year with normal rainfall, and November 27, 2009, a year when the rains failed and a severe drought overtook the land. The image to the right clearly shows that the only thriving vegetation is in small patches close to the larger rivers and streams; much of the remaining land is completely barren. The year 2009 sa...
This pair of Landsat images shows the rapid loss of the fabled glaciers and snowfields crowning Mt. Kilimanjaro between 1993 and 2000. With the snow and ice nearly gone, the volcano's crater is visible on the later image. The snowfields were first measured in 1912, and by 2009, 86% of that original extent was gone. Melting has become much more rapid in the last decade. While multiple factors...
This pair of images illustrates the rise in sea surface temperature in the Florida Keys between June 11, 1985 and July 4, 2005. Most of the surface has warmed by one to two degrees Fahrenheit. Rising ocean temperatures due to climate change pose a tremendous threat to coral reefs and the marine life they shelter. Global water temperatures began a steady rise in the 1980s, accompanied by coral...
The ecological questions in this exercise are:
1) Have long-term temperatures changed throughout Ohio? 2) How will these temperature changes impact plant and animal phenology, ecological interactions, and, as a result, species diversity?
This exercise is designed to give students experience working with large datasets and to allow them to use real ecological data to evaluate long-term...
