Ecological processes and patterns interact at various scales across landscapes. Spatially explicit consideration of pattern and process can better inform ecological questions. Species diversity generally increases in the tropics but testing theories that explain this phenomenon is challenging. Here we use body size to quantify niches in ecological communities and explore how species diversify towards the equator.
This lab exercise is an active learning introduction to techniques used to analyze soil microbiome data. Students will also learn about forming hypotheses, what kind of questions can be answered with this data, and practice the scientific method.
